In this FIRST episode of our 3-part interview series with Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, MPH, we explore the profound world of Ayurveda—a more than 10,000-year-old healing system, and how it has found its place in modern medicine. Dr. Bhattacharya shares her personal journey of integrating Ayurveda and Homeopathy into her family medicine practice, blending ancient wisdom with contemporary clinical care.

We also take a look back at the history of Ayurveda’s arrival in the U.S., tracing its roots from the spiritual seekers of the 1960s to its mainstream adoption in today’s wellness landscape. From the practices of the early pioneers to how Ayurveda is currently being integrated into modern health care, this episode offers insights into how these ancient healing traditions are reshaping Western medicine.

Guest Bio:

Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya is a licensed, board-certified MD physician-scientist and writer, practicing integrative medicine in NY and CA, working to bring the wisdom and science of authentic traditional medicines such as Ayurveda and yoga into the mainstream using evidence. She serves as Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan and on two NIH committees evaluating research on integrative treatments for patient care. She serves as Medical Director of a start-up digital health venture codifying ayurveda.

Bhattacharya completed a mid-career PhD in ancient Ayurvedic chemistry from Banaras Hindu University. She also holds degrees in neuroscience (BA, UPenn), pharmacology (MA, ColumbiaU), public health (MPH, HarvardU), medicine (MD, RushUChicago), and trainings in family medicine, preventive medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, yoga, and herbal medicines.

Bhattacharya is a senior Fulbright Scholar in medical sciences, a Fulbright Specialist in global public health, and a WHO-GTMC Consultant. She is recipient of the Leadership Award by the American Medical Association, and she is the first Indian to deliver the Commencement address at Harvard University. Her work is featured in the documentary, Healers: Journey into Ayurveda on the Discovery Channel. Her book Everyday Ayurveda is a national bestseller published by Penguin Random House.
